The third puzzler was to count the number of save results for this army, composed of Lava Elves, Frostwings and Dragonkin units.
The calculation is set put below using the Die Roll Resolution from the rules:-
1 – Roll the dice.
This is what we roll.
2 – Check to see if any existing effects will force or allow a die to be re-rolled. Apply these effects one at a time until all re-rolls have been made.
3 – Identify any applicable SAIs that have not already been applied and apply their effects one by one in whatever order you choose. Any normal action results or roll modifiers that those SAIs generate are applied during the following steps.
4 – Count up all non-SAI generated action results to obtain a subtotal.
None of the effects include anything to do with missile or melee results, so these can be discounted. We have 5 manoeuvre, 4 saves, 4 IDs and 3 autosaves.
5 – Apply modifiers that subtract (results can never be reduced to below 0).
The Deluge subtracts 3 manoeuvre results. We remove the ones from the Frostwings first, as they do not convert to saves using Volcanic Adaptation.
6 – Apply modifiers that divide (results are rounded down).
The Flanked icon on the minor terrain halves the save results (the IDs are save results), so we leave as many IDs as possible.
7 – Add SAI generated action results to obtain a new subtotal.
Our 4 Counter SAIs become 4 saves, and the 2 Fly become 2 saves.
8 – Apply modifiers that multiply.
9 – Apply modifiers that add (any ‘counts as’ results are also added now) to obtain a final total.
The IDs are saves (I now use a save icon instead of ID icons), and the manoeuvre results from the Lava Elves ‘count as’ saves using their Volcanic Adaptation ability. The 4 manoeuvres from the Wind Walk spell can’t be used in the Volcanic Adaptation as it is not generated by the Lava Elves.
This means that the total number of saves, and the answer to our Puzzler #3 is 16. Congratulations to everyone who got this answer.
